American Adventures, the Atlanta area small amusement park in Marietta, GA, recently announced its closure via the park’s website. “Due to circumstances beyond our control, we will be closed until further notice. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience.” The park was built as an addition to Six Flags White Water. Starting in May 2008 Zuma Holdings began leasing the park. Six Flags season pass holders did not have included admission to American Adventures with their season passes. The park had moved from paid admission to the pay per ride option.

On Thursday crews began dismantling the Zippin Pippin rollercoaster at the former Libertyland amusement park in Memphis, TN. Work crews are clearing the land for redevelopment. Libertyland closed in October 2005. Zippin Pippin stood without maintenance exposed to the elements since then, rotting away. For several years the Coaster Wars raged between Cedar Point and Six Flags Magic Mountain. One park would always try to top the other in the design of their new ride and on top of that try and take the coveted title of the park with the most coasters in the world. Well, I guess you could say the war was just taking a ceasefire, as Six Flags has thrown down the gauntlet and added two coasters within two years.

Merlin Entertainment, the new owner of Cypress Gardens have announced that the park will be changed into a Legoland like it’s sister parks in California and England.
The park is not scheduled to open until the end of 2011. It will have about 40-50 attractions added into the park and has shaved years off of developing the park due to it already being used as an amusement park. The company will be pouring a few hundred million dollars into the park and expect it to open with some of the existing attractions.

Gamblers in Las Vegas will soon have the ability to take the fall off the 1,149-foot Stratosphere tower and hotel. The hotel that has made its name offering an observation tower with unique over the top thrill rides will add a 855 foot freefall experience called SkyJump Las Vegas. Thrill seekers will be able to take a controlled freefall from the top of Stratosphere tower to a landing platform located on the second level. SkyJump would join Big Shot, Insanity, and X-Scream at the top of the tower. Based on a similiar experience off the Auckland Sky Tower in New Zealand the $3 million SkyJump Las Vegas began construction this month. It is expected to debut in April with a rider cost of $100. Guide wires will keep riders from slamming into the concrete structure of the 100 story Stratosphere as they descend.
